Crab and Lobster are difficult to weigh raw so they will need to be boiled first for a couple of minutes. Alternately you can cheat and purchase canned crab meat in water (not in oil).

How to Cook a Live Crab or Lobster

Pour about 5 L of water into a large saucepan and add 5 Tbsp salt. Bring to a rapid boil.

Put the live crab or lobster in the freezer for about 5 minutes. This will put him to sleep. Remove from the freezer and put the crab or lobster in the boiling water head first. Cooking time is between 8 – 15 minutes depending on the size of the crab or lobster. A 1 kg (2 lbs) crab or lobster will take about 15 minutes. When the crab or lobster’s shell turns bright orange, it is done. Remove from the water and plunge it into cold water to stop the cooking process. When cool, remove the shell and harvest the meat.
